Extraction Method

Cedar belongs to the coniferous family; the essence is obtained through steam distillation of sawdust and cedar roots. Its red wood is particularly popular for making closets and wardrobes due to its insect-repellant properties. Several varieties of cedar are used in perfumery, such as Atlas Cedar or Cedar of China. Each possesses distinct olfactive properties.

Uses

Cedar is used mainly in functional perfumery, air fresheners and soap manufacturing. Cedar essence from Texas and Virginia forms the basis of a number of synthetic products used in high-quality perfumery. These maintain their basically woody quality with a more refined and distinguished scent.

History

The king of Assyria had his palace in Nineveh built out of cedarwood, known for its durability. Medicinal properties Cedar is sometimes used as a mosquito repellent.
